Why is a solenoid valve best to use with AVR Microcontoller (when measuring water flow)?

I need to know the benefits of a solenoid valve when i am measuring the flow rate of water using Microprocessors? Also are there any other valves i should be looking into?

Simplicity of computer control and monitoring.

It only has two parts, the solenoid and the valve, and is easily controlled by your program. It’s main functions in fluids are to turn on and off fluids, which makes it very simple to time fluid flow intervals.

More likely, you will want to use a proportional control Solenoid Valve, which can vary flow rates from 0 to 100% of rating by standard microprocessor outputs through digital-voltage converters. Again, very simple in design, implementation and use.

If you need anything more complicated than straight or proportional solenoid Valves, it will be for more complicated or specialized needs. These are more than good enough in most cases.

I’ve included a couple of Wikipedia results, in case you haven’t used that resource much, and there’s a lot of interesting data on line from valve manufacturers.
