This is my Father’s 1999 Toyota Camry with the 3.0 liter V6 (1MZ-FE) engine. About every three years, the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve always gets clogged up causing the car to keep stalling when cold started unless the accelerator was depressed while the engine warms up.

It’s expensive to replace (someone quoted my dad $300) but I read that a shot of carburetor cleaner down the hole usually takes care of the problem.

This short video was shot the day we had a guest speaker come to the college to present on Fisher FieldVue (digital) positioners. I wanted to demonstrate the hazards ociated with Ball ValvValves on a workbench by chopping a pencil in half with one as it closes.

The series of flashes you see in the first part of the video was me taking still-photos of the valve in five different positions, for use as illustrations in the instrumentation textbook I’m writing.

Experience has taught us that it is not uncommon for employees responsible for visually inspecting tanks after storms and other accident causing events, often time fail to carry out such duties and in fact, in some cases, actually force the conventional oil spill prevention valves to remain open. This “obviates” their perceived need for continued and regular visual inspections thus exposing the owner to expensive clean up costs and legal liability.
