solenoid valve steam engine generator
This is an experiment just to see if this can be done. Yes, it can work but not well. The piston is too small to generate the power needed to get to the 3600 rpm an alternator needs to do its work. You can get the two stroke converted, but using magnets on the flywheel and a magnetic pickup isn’t enough.
A steam engine needs at least a 50% steam admission for this kind of hard continuous duty. It will also need some kind of auxillary exhaust so compression is lessoned on the up stoke. Solenoids don’t like steam temperatures and pressures over 125 psi. Also the port size on most solenoids are too small by far. Look for a port opening of ten percent of the swept area by the piston

Horizontal 4-stroke Compressed Air Engine
This engine uses a valve of my own design to emulate a 4 stroke action, much like an internal combustion engine. However, this engine runs on Air. The intake valve is a standard poppet valve like an automobile engine uses. However, instead of a cam actuated exhaust valve, the engine uses a sliding piston in the head. When the intake valve is closed, a spring pushes the piston valve right and allows air out (and in) of the cylinder through the exhaust port. When the intake valve opens, the incoming pressurized air pushes the sliding piston to the left, closing the exhaust port and directing the input air to the cylinder where it pushes the piston down. A cam, which runs at 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft, admits air for a power stroke every other revolution of the crankshaft. The flywheels are about 3″ in diameter, the bore is 3/4″ and the stroke about an inch.

STEAM ENGINE FROM AN AIR COMPRESSOR Solar Engine for Future Tests
This is the engine that was converted from an old special tilt piston air compressor. This is the exact same principal from a certain type of “Air Hogs” plane engine. In the opener the engine was running at 35-50 psi and the second start was around 75-80 psi. Top RPMS so far is 1700 at 110 PSI. The timing still needs some work. Solenoid Valves with a Reed Switch and a Magnet are great ways of testing air/steam engines to perfect the timing. A slide valve will eventually be needed as the Solenoid Valve is rated at 100,000 – 1,000,000 cycles. This engine would wear it out in a day.
The flywheel is wafer board (simple easy but not balanced or perfected).
Not shown, top voltage from a permanent magnet motor (tread mill) 21 volts, top load 75 watts. The belt started slipping and the timing was hard to get back to perfect for the load.
This engine will run 4 minutes on a full 10 gallon tank of air. The last minute is slow around 500 rpms to 50 rpms.

Overhead Valve Single Compressed Air Model Engine Steam
3/4″ Bore, 7/8″ Stroke, cam driven, pushrod operated overhead ballbearing valve with slave ballbearing valve for exhaust. Air pressure into the engine is controlled by the single overhead ballbearing valve. The exhaust valve, also a ball bearing is actuated by the incoming pressure when the inlet valve is opened. As long as the inlet valve is held open, the exhaust valve will held closed by the inlet air pressure. As long as the inlet valve is closed, the exhaust valve will be held open by an exhaust valve spring.
